MGI faculty members who wish to hire new employees in their laboratory should come
to the MGI Business Office and talk with Christine VanDeuren, our Human Resources
Administrator. She will help you determine the appropriate position for your new employee
and will prepare and process all of the necessary paperwork.
As a reminder, a foreign national who is not authorized to work in the U.S. cannot
volunteer at the University in a position for which wages would normally be paid or
other benefits would typically be provided. Here is link to the Statement from our General Counsel which explains the situation in detail.

Support staff positions will be posted on the MSU jobs website. Offers of regular
employment, including salary commitments, may be made only with the approval of MSU
Human Resources Staffing Services.

Temporary and On-Call Employees
Temporary Employees can be hired to work 40 hours a week for 120 days. On-Call employees
can be hired to work 19 hours or less per week and are not subject to a pre-determined
end date.
Beginning January 1, 2015, under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), temporary employees
become immediately eligible for benefits if it is known that they will be paid an
average of 30 hours per week for at least 90 days at the time of being newly hired.
The employee will be offered the opportunity to enroll in an MSU designed health plan.

Student Employees
Domestic students may work up to 29 hours per week while international students may
work up to 20 hours per week. All students are eligile to work up to 40 hours per
week during the week of finals, semester breaks, and the summer semester.
