Marissa Malleck receives MSU Spartan Volunteer Service Award
Marissa Malleck, a sophomore in MSU’s Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology,
has been awarded the 2022-23 Spartan Volunteer Service Award. The award, presented
by the MSU President and the Center for Community Engaged Learning, recognizes students
who participate in more than 100 hours of verified community-engaged learning or volunteering
in a year.
Malleck volunteered for almost 820 hours last year, making her the student with the
second-highest number of hours in the university.

Malleck is a pre-med student majoring in Genomics and Molecular Genetics, and both of her volunteering positions are medically focused. Her primary role is with the Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Team at the MSU Center for Survivors.
“I am a crisis advocate, so I respond to hotline calls and do in-person advocacy at resident halls and at the sexual assault health care facility,” says Malleck, “I started volunteering last spring (2023), and we received 40 hours of training, which was in-person and online.”
“I think it is really meaningful, just being able to help people in the community and MSU students and being able to talk to and provide emotional support for survivors,” she adds.
Malleck also serves as a Patient Transport at Sparrow Hospital where she is responsible
for escorting patients through the hospital. “I really enjoy being able to talk to
patients and to help them in some way during their stay at a hospital,” says Malleck.
“I feel like I have always valued volunteering. Being able to serve other people has
always been really important to me.”
Malleck received her award at an event at the Kellogg Center on January 19, 2024.
