Graduate Student Workshop

GSW is a Michigan State University Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology (MGI) graduate student-led organization that facilitates and supports the success of graduate students. The topics of our workshops include, but are not limited to, public oral presentation preparations, professional development, physical and mental wellness, and resources available on campus and beyond.

Meetings are held approximately every other Thursday at noon in 2245 BPS. 

Food is always provided.

Committee Student Rep (24-25) Short Description

Faculty Meeting Reps

Rosemary Northcote, Maddy Quinlan

Attend monthly faculty meetings to discuss updates regarding the MGI department, faculty, appointments, and teaching. Report back to graduate students as well as communicate graduate student ideas/concerns to the faculty. Two representatives are allowed.

Graduate Committee Rep

Eleanor Scheeres

Attend monthly one-hour meetings to discuss changes happening in the graduate school. This includes curriculum, handbook, and teaching changes. Voice student concerns and your own opinions at this meeting, then report back to the graduate students any changes being discussed. Only one representative is allowed.

Seminar Committee Rep

Rosemary Northcote, Maddy Quinlan

Coordinate the invitation of student invited speakers. Attend a once-a-year meeting to discuss the list of speakers for the year. You will also plan and manage the graduate student lunches for each speaker.

Student Advisory Council (SAC)

Kyleen Hall, Sarah VanDiepenbos

Attend monthly (usually on Wednesday evening) meetings with the dean of the College of Natural Sciences and other department student reps. Communicate graduate student ideas/concerns and report back any changes. You can also participate in additional committees such as the awards committee that picks Natsci award recipients.

COGS Rep

Jessica Hodgkins

Serve as a graduate student representative for MGI on the university-wide graduate student governance board. Attend monthly 2-3 hour longs meeting at Chittenden Hall (there is a zoom option). Reps must attend 2/3 meetings in an academic year. You must also serve on another committee of your choosing, such as a public transportation committee. You will vote on proposed legislature, voice student concerns, and send weekly emails to the department.

Outreach & Events Committee

Eleanor Scheeres, Jess Lysne

Work with the MGI office to plan the Fall Welcome Party/Picnic to welcome incoming MGI first years. You may also plan other events/outreach opportunities if funding allows.

GSW Committee President

Jeannette Farnham, Kendall Mara

Plan the biweekly Graduate Student Workshop meetings. This includes communicating with invited speakers and planning each topic and food option. You will lead each meeting and help coordinate communication between other student reps and the graduate students.

Treasurer

Sydney Chen

Manage the GSW budget, and order food/other items needed for meetings. This may require picking up anything that cannot be delivered.

GSW Committee Secretary

Grace Semaan

Manage the RSO email/sending out meeting reminders, putting together and sending out monthly newsletters/meeting schedules, taking meeting minutes as needed, and organizing zoom options as needed.
